Smooth Sailing into August…

As this last month of Summer kicks-off before the start of the new school year, many parents are making their way to St. Michael’s, Maryland, to enjoy a little R&R…and what better way to escape then to get out on the water for a sunset sailboat ride; day of crabbing/fishing on the Bay; a wine/beer tasting cruise; and so much more!

One of our favorite recommendations to guests while visiting Wades Point, is to spend part of your day out on the water with some of our favorite local charters such as Captain Ed Farley with the Skipjack H.M. Krentz [#410.745.6080], Captain Iris Clarke with the Selina II Sailboat (and who is actually the granddaughter of the  Sailboat’s original owners) [#410.726.9400], and Captain Wade Murphy; owner of the Rebecca T. Ruark Skipjack [#410.829.3976]. Every guest we send their way, neither choice ever seems to disappoint!

According to one of our recent guest reviews, there are a variety of reasons that make going out on the Rebecca T. Ruark Skipjack such a memorable experience:

“Thank you to the Wades Point Inn for recommending Captain Wade Murphy and the Rebecca T. Ruark! Expecting just a simple ride on the water, Captain Wade made our 2-hour experience something more special than any boat ride we’ve ever taken. Captain Wade and his family are unfortunately a dying breed! To be able to sail on a beautiful, historic vessel is one thing, but Captain Wade allows you to be a part of the experience. If you want to learn, help, and even pilot the boat, this is the place to be!  Being with Captain Wade was absolutely the best part of our vacation! So much so, we went back again the next day! And at only $30 a person for the trip, the experience of being part of the crew and the history lesson we were given ended up being the least expensive thing we did over our entire vacation. Of course, Captain Wade will give you the option of just a ride with peace & quiet as well if that’s what you’re looking for, but we highly recommend choosing to be part of the experience!”

Thank you to ALL our local Captains’ and their crews for continually helping us create such wonderful memories for our guests…and don’t forget to ask us about how to book your boating trips on the water during your next visit to the Wades Point Inn on the Bay!

In the blink of an eye

In the blink of an eye, another super busy July ends at Wades Point on the Bay with lots of happy guests!

As we look back and reflect on the best of this past month, family reunions are at the top of our list!  We have been very lucky over the years to have had some of the same families visit us every season, each becoming a part of our “Wades Point” family.  And there is definitely nothing better than Lucy remembering these guests so well that you can hear her talking to them as soon as they arrive!

From riding bikes, kayaking, paddle boarding, or just relaxing off of our swim dock on a raft for a few…or maybe even sitting by our firepit under the stars making smores and telling stories you have yet to hear…or having a friendly cornhole competition during a sunny, Summer day while others decide to take a nap in a hammock or even toss around one of our refreshing sprinkler balls…all of these amenities and more are at our guests’ fingertips, creating lasting memories and never leaving anyone without something fun to do!

New Innkeeper’s Perspective

As I sit here looking at the still water of the Chesapeake Bay through the window of a beautiful, bright and happy “Bay Room” (which also serves as the daily breakfast space), I am reminded of how lucky I am to be one of the newest members of the Wades Point Inn staff, for a few simple reasons:

  • The owners, Ms. Betsy & her daughter Beth, along with Lucy of course (the head woman/beagle in charge), truly treat myself and the rest of the staff like family…and this means everything!
  • I get the opportunity to meet so many wonderful, new people/guests every day, and from all over the world!
  • I look forward to the overall sense of calm that comes when I have the chance to wake up early to a beautiful sunrise. Or ending my day with a nice glass of wine and watching the sunset while swinging in one of the outside hammocks.
  • There is always something to do here! Take out a paddleboard or kayak; ride a bike; read a good book on one of the many porches; walk the mile-long property trail and see various wildlife; while at the same time, noticing the newest flowers in bloom (which by the way, have all been strategically placed and planted by Ms. Betsy & Beth — they are both “ jacks of all trades” and at no time do we ever seem to go without some of their beautiful creations in bloom and spread across the property…inside and out)!
  • And last but definitely not least, breakfast is seriously no joke here! I’ve stayed in many B&B’s but nothing has come close to topping the AMAZING breakfast at this hidden gem!

As we approach the peak of our 2018 season, we are excited about sharing all the new and fun adventures that will be coming our way!  And from all of us here at Wades Point Inn on the Bay, we look forward to greeting you soon!

And we aren’t talking about Lucille Ball. We are talking about our lovely

little beagle named Lucy!

Miss Betsy (Proprietor of Wades Point Inn) found one-year-old Lucy

in a shelter. After several visits to the shelter, Miss Betsy decided to

bring Lucy home to Wades Point Inn. Lucy was caged beside a larger

dog who barked and carried on constantly and made Lucy very upset.

Miss Betsy wanted to take Lucy away from that and bring her home

to the peace and tranquility of Wades Point Inn.

Going from a 1 year old pup to a 12-13 year old mature dog has provided many stories of her adventures, mischeveious actions and

tender moments. Lucy would go on hunting adventures in the swamp.

Miss Betsy talks about how Lucy would be gone for hours and come

back muddy and wet—sure sign she was hunting in that swamp again.

A guest shared a story about when she was visiting and laid in the

hammock to catch a nap. When she went to sleep she had on two

flip-flops and when she woke up she had on one flip-flop. Thinking

it had just fallen off her foot while she was sleeping, she rolled over to

pick it up off the ground, but found no flip-flop. Little did she know that

while she was sleeping a sweet little beagle had walked past and took

that flip-flop and carried it off.   The guest found it several hours later

on the ground on the other side of the property.

If you are sitting alone relaxing or reading a good book, don’t be surprised if you look down and see Lucy lying there. It’s as if she doesn’t like seeing anyone sitting alone and she feels the need to

keep them company. She is probably hoping that soon you will break

out a snack or two and share with her if she is lucky! lol

Lucy has captured the hearts of all of the family and staff and continues

to play hostess to all of our guests. Lucy we love you!

War of 1812, Thomas Kemp, and the Pride of Baltimore

Here’s a question for all of you history buffs out there: What do Thomas Kemp, the Wades Point Inn, and the War of 1812 have in common?

In August of 1813, the British Royal Navy came up the Chesapeake planning to take over the town of St. Michaels. They were met with much resistance in St. Michaels harbor, so they regrouped and took their troops down the Bay searching for a way to get their troops on land. Coming ashore at Wades Point, the British troops started their march into St. Michaels, only to be met by five hundred (unexpected) Maryland troops beginning what is now said to be the largest land battle in Maryland for the War of 1812. Where does Thomas Kemp fit into all of this, you ask? Well, Thomas Kemp was a shipbuilder in Fells Point and built some of the fastest ships on the Chesapeake Bay (and subsequently used in the War of 1812)—including the Chausser, which was known as “The Pride of Baltimore”, and after which the current Pride of Baltimore was modeled. Thomas Kemp also went on to buy Wades Point after the war and moved his family there away from the hustle and bustle of the city. He put his architectural skills to work building his new how which was inspired by the Brice house in Annapolis. Tucked alongside of the top of the chimney is a  hidden room,  the perfect lookout for spotting those pesky British ships!

On Saturday, July 27, Wades Point Inn will be hosting a discussion about the War of 1812, which will be led by a group of authors who joined forces to produce a book about the War and how it affected St. Michaels. Join us for a great discussion, beautiful views, and scrumptious hors d’oeuvres. The reception will begin at 5 p.m., and seats are going fast! Call the Inn today at 410.745.2500 to reserve your seat and to be a part of this historical celebration!

Getting into the spirit of all things nautical and Chesapeake Bay related, we’ve updated and added to our “fleet” of kayaks  and have also added paddle boards for our guests. For those who like to keep your feet on dry land, don’t worry—we’ve also updated and added to our “fleet” of bicycles for your cruising pleasure!

As you know, Wades Point Inn Bed & Breakfast is just a few miles from downtown St. Michaels, close enough to town to offer the convenience of shopping, dining, antiquing, and festival-going, but far enough away to be peaceful and relaxing. Staying with us here at Wades Point Inn offers the best of both worlds!

St. Patrick’s Day in St. Michaels—A Celebration Like No Other!

Although we’re not quite open for the season, we’re looking forward to seeing all of our friends after this long, not-so-cold winter, and thought you might want to start planning for an upcoming visit. That being said, we thought we’d provide a listing of some upcoming events that might interest you.

For starters, St. Michaels is planning a St. Patrick’s Day celebration, Eastern Shore style! Like most other towns, St. Michaels likes to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in our own way, and we have quite an agenda of festivities planned for the weekend.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, many make it a point to come out and celebrate St. Patty’s Day in St. Michaels, and we want you to join us! I mean, where else can you personally decorate a shopping cart and race it (with your intrepid best friend/spouse/etc. as your “passenger”!) through the center of town without being arrested? Our shopping cart races are a lot of fun, and we think you’d love it! But, if shopping cart races aren’t your style, St. Michael’s has events scheduled all weekend. There are lots of family-friendly events, and everything takes place in or near downtown St. Michaels, just a short jaunt from Wades Point Inn. Below is a brief schedule of events for the weekend:

Saturday, March 16th

12 – 2:00 p.m. Scavenger Hunt – the grand prize is a week-long stay in Key West!
12 – 3:00 p.m. Family fun and games at the St. Michaels Community Center
12 – 5:00 p.m. Catch the Leprechaun—if you can! He’s quick, but if you can catch this
1 – 3:00 p.m. Live music at Eastern Shore Brewing (Don’t forget your dancing shoes!)
3 – 3:30 p.m. Costume contest for the best Leprechaun or Irishman
5:45 p.m. Irish Wake Procession
6 p.m. Irish Wake Celebration and dinner buffet for $17 at Marcoritaville Restaurant.

And in addition to these fun events, raffle tickets will be sold all day at various locations throughout town—who knows? With the “Luck of the Irish”, you might just be the winner!

Sunday, March 17th

12:00 p.m. Drawing for raffle and announcement of scavenger hunt winners
11:30 p.m. Shopping Cart Races at Carpenter Street Saloon

For more information on St. Michaels St. Patrick’s Day events being offered, you can call (410) 745-0411.

Other upcoming events include:

WineFest at St. Michaels, April 27th & 28th
St Michaels Running Festival, May 18th
Antique & Classic Boat Show, June 17th
Independence Day Celebration, June 30th

We’ll be providing more information about these (and other) events as the dates draw near, so check back often.

If you’re still not sure if you want a peaceful, relaxing retreat or a fun-filled weekend, why not have both? Since Wades Point Inn is just a short road trip from Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Annapolis, you can relax with us at Wade’s Point Inn before hitting the town to join in the fun—or not! And in the morning, enjoy the awesome views of the Chesapeake Bay while enjoying local favorites at our breakfast buffet. You CAN have the best of both worlds; join us…we’ll show you how it’s done!

Welcome to the All New Wades Point Inn Blog!

ariel viewWade’s Point Inn is one of the most picturesque water front B&Bs in the Delmarva area. A short drive from Washington DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, Wade’s Point is located near Saint Michaels, Maryland and nestled along the banks of the Chesapeake Bay (at the mouth of the Eastern Bay, to be exact), Wades Point Inn offers unprecedented water views from each and every guest room. Choose the room that most fits your style—from the more modern rooms in the Kemp House to the charming, history filled rooms of the Main House—all of our rooms are listed on our website at, so you can choose the one in which you’ll be most comfortable. Whether you choose modern or a piece of history, we strive to offer the amenities you enjoy most in all of our guest rooms—private bathrooms with large claw-foot tubs or spacious showers, comfortable pillow top beds with luxurious linens, awesome water views, private porches, and wonderful mouth-watering breakfasts to start your day. Wades Point Inn is the place to be for a relaxing weekend away or a fun-filled excursion.  Spring is in the air, and we’re working hard to get our waterfront inn ready for the season. We’ve been painting and updating and sprucing things up, and we can’t wait for you to visit!

Along with sprucing up our waterfront rooms, we’re also painting our kayaks and canoes  and oiling the chains on our bicycles in anticipation of your visit. Boating and biking are only two of the activities we offer at the Inn; you can also kayak, hike, bird watch, swim, fish, stroll, or just relax in one of our comfy chairs with a good book and an awesome view of the Chesapeake Bays sunsets. If kayaking, hiking and biking aren’t your thing, you can shop-til-you-drop in nearby Saint Michaels. With an eclectic mix of stores—from antiques to contemporary—you’re sure to find that perfect gift. Known as a foodie destination the Bay Hundred area is host to world-class restaurants where the chefs are passionate about using locally grown foods to create their regional specialties.

Saint Michaels also offers a variety of events throughout the year, from our Wine Festival in the spring to Christmas in St. Michaels in December. We’ll be posting information about upcoming events and specials so check back often to make sure you don’t miss anything!

If you’d like to have your own special event, we can make that happen, too! From “Girl’s Weekends” to cooking classes to weddings, our staff will take care of all the details (or as many as you want us to)—all you have to do is ask!

If you’ve been here before, you’ve met Lucy, our resident beagle. This year Lucy has a new friend, Chester, a handsome dachshund, is as lovable and welcoming as Lucy, and can’t wait for you to rub his tummy! Because both of our resident pooches are small, we ask that you take your time coming down the drive to the Inn. This way you’ll be sure to enjoy the view AND keep a watchful eye out for those playful pups!
